In the sea of the various trims and models that Porsche has produced throughout the years, the two main sport coupes models of the esteemed brand, the 911 and Cayman, have stood in the limelight of the brand's popularity in recent years. Both are fast, track beasts. But what are the true differences between either model?
Well for starters, The Cayman has a mid engine layout, whereas the 911 is arranged in a rear engine format. This leads to a difference in weight distribution between both designs. A mid engine layout will provide a much more balanced experience in terms of handling characteristics, compared to the much more unique rear heavy design the 911 possesses. The Cayman is agile and responsive, the 911 has a unique character, which can be difficult.
So why even bother with a rear engine format? Because of the rear heavy distribution, handling under acceleration out of corners is supreme, which gives the 911 a distinctive advantage over other cars found on the track. The 911's rear causes a pendulum effect, which could lead to oversteer, skilled drivers are able to leverage this momentum into grip. The lower center of gravity also allows the 911 to stay planted under high speeds.
